What’s in a name?
‘Bitter Old Bustard’ is named after the Great Bustard (Otis tarda). The name Otis is Greek for ear, as in ear of wheat or barely. Each spring male Great Bustards grow whiskers which closely resemble the ears of wheat. The Latin word tarda means slow. The Great Bustard became extinct in the UK in 1832 but was recently reintroduced to Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire.
